Proposed amalgamation of Ark Chamberlain Academy and Perry Beeches V

The proposal

On Wednesday 10th January Ark announced the beginning of a consultation on a proposal to amalgamate Ark Chamberlain Primary Academy and Ark Victoria Academy (current named Perry Beeches V) on 1st September 2018.

Rationale

There is currently an over provision of primary school places in Small Heath and this is having a significant impact on local schools, particularly at St Benedict’s, where pupil numbers have been falling dramatically in recent years.  We have therefore been in discussions with the Local Authority about how we might work together to provide the correct number of primary school places in the area to ensure greater stability at all schools in the future.

With Perry Beeches V (PBV) joining the Ark network on 1st March 2018 (renamed as Ark Victoria Academy), and being so closely located to Chamberlain, we believe that the best opportunity to achieve this is to bring Chamberlain and PBV together to create one four form entry all-through school.  In parallel, the Local Authority has also decided that the best thing for St Benedict’s is that it transition from a five form entry infant school to become a two form entry primary school.

Therefore, on Wednesday 10th January Ark began a consultation on the amalgamation of Chamberlain with PBV (Ark Victoria) to create a four form entry all-through school from September 2018.  What this means in practice is that Ark Victoria’s PAN (Published Admissions Number) will expand from 100 to 120, and Ark Chamberlain will close.  All pupils currently at PBV and Chamberlain will automatically become pupils at Ark Victoria when it amalgamates in September 2018.  At the same time, the Local Authority will also be consulting on its proposal that St Benedict’s becomes a two form entry (60 place) primary school from September 2018.

In joining Chamberlain and PBV (Ark Victoria) together we believe that we have a unique opportunity to create a first-class all-through education for children in Small Heath with access to high quality facilities and plentiful outside space – at the same time as helping to ensure the long term viability of our neighbouring primary schools.

Consultation process

Over the next four weeks we will be holding consultation meetings with staff and parents at Chamberlain and PBV, as well as consulting with other local stakeholders and interested parties.  Anybody wanted to respond to this consultation should do so in writing to Kirsty.mack@arkonline.org.  The consultation period will end on Wednesday 7th February.  Following the consultation, we will apply to the Regional Schools Commissioner for approval for the amalgamation.
